SPEECH #2

Culture Speech Assignment  100 pts

 The purpose of this assignment is to inform the audience about a culture other than your own.  You may choose a culture or a subculture.  Through your information, explanation and examples, the audience should gain insight into the uniqueness of the culture and its people.  Remember: the focus is a culture not on the geography or history of a country or group.  Your speech should not make judgments of the culture, but rather, be an objective study.

 1.  You should first select a culture/subculture to focus on and then select a focus
      topic/ area of interest within that culture. 

2.  You will perform research on this topic including: interviews, library research, and media analysis

3.  Sources:  at least 3 Sources, must be three different types of sources
     media                                                                 internet
     interview                                                           text (book, periodical, encyclopedia etc)

4.  You should include at least 1 visual aid.  Be creative!

 

Grading:
The speech grade will be based on the following:
4 – 7 minutes                                                                                         1 appropriate visual aid
3 bibliographic sources cited within the speech                             Extemporaneous delivery
Supporting materials from research: 3 of the 4 types:
(Definition, example, statistic, testimony)
Audience analysis
Organization                                                                                         3 note cards (4x6 or 3x5)

Japanese                Thai                        Italian                                     Brazilian

Polish                     American               Jamaican                                Russian

Spanish                  Native American  Polynesian                            Arabian

African                   Chinese                  Mexican                                 Irish
Also, you could pick a subculture within these cultures


 Possible areas of interest:
Art                                          Communication                    Dress                                      Celebrations
Food                                       Entertainment                       Music                                     Religion

** If you pick a small subculture, you may not need to focus on one area of interest.  Check with me.

Outline:

A full sentence, typed outline (50 pts) must be turned in on the day you speak.  Follow the requirements from the previous outline assignment.  You must label the major parts of the introduction and conclusion, as well as your supporting material.  A typed bibliography using MLA format should be included.
