SPEECH #4

Sales

This speech will be a culmination of everything you have learned in class.  Each student will pick an item or service to sell to their audience.  You will then research the product and the needs that are fulfilled by the product.  The topic and speech content should be specific and involve the actual selling of the topic.  A brand name must be identified.  The topic of choice should be of interest to the speaker and one that the audience can afford and is likely to use.  There is a $100 price limit.

  1. The speech will be organized according to Monroe’s Motivated Sequence:

            (1) Attention (2) Need (3) Satisfaction (4) Visualization (5) Action.

  1. You will perform research on this topic including: interviews, library research,

            and media analysis

      3.  Sources:  3 Sources (again, 3 of the four types are required)

      4.  You should include at least 2 visual aids.  One must be the product that you are

selling.  The other should be an appropriate visual that supports, clarifies, and

      adds interest to the speech.

Grading:
The speech grade will be based on the following:
4 – 7 minutes                                                                            2 appropriate visual aids
3 sources cited within the speech                                                Extemporaneous delivery
3 of the 4 supporting materials from research:
Definition, example, statistic, testimony
3 Appeals                                                                                 Audience analysis
Organization: Monroe’s Mot. Sequence                                      1 note card (4x6 or 3x5)

Speeches will be evaluated on: (1) clarity, completeness and effectiveness of speech; (2) effective use of supporting materials and visual aids; (3) effective use of attention factors; (4) adherence to the time limit; (5) presentation skills.

Outline:
A full sentence, typed outline (50 pts) must be turned in on the day you speak.  Follow the requirements from the previous outline assignment.  However, you will be using a different organizational pattern; you will not have a separate intro, body and conclusion.  You will instead label five main points, one for each step of the sequence.  You must label the major parts of the introduction and conclusion, as well as your supporting material.  A typed bibliography using MLA format should be included.

Topic ideas: Webster’s Student Dictionary, Coca-Cola, A.G. Edwards, Crest Multi-Purpose toothpaste, Clean and Green cleanser, Terminex, Peter Pan Peanut Butter, Aquafina, Nicoderm CQ, Pantene Shampoo and Conditioner, Cross pen and pencil set, Crazy Glue, travel agents, Maglite flashlight, Motel 6, Visa check card, Iams pet food…
